Estimates for a full-time marketer in Derbyshire on £30,000, using 2026/27 rates. Holiday pay is part of the salary, so you’re paying for 28 days when nobody’s doing the work. I set up a day for Ginger Butchers in Matlock. I got the Mayor to come in and BBC Radio Derby down to do a piece on them, and I filmed all of it.

I studied media photography, and then I was a production assistant for a live events business for a few years, where I edited loads of videos and did loads of graphic design, and the lighting and sound and staging at the events as well. Then I went into logistics and ended up operations director, running 100 odd wagons, so lots of stress, lots of staff, and I got to the end of it and thought, I don’t really like lorries, what am I doing? I was completely burnt out by then, so I built a studio in a shed at the bottom of the garden and left my phone in the house for a bit.
Then a couple of people I’d worked with before got in touch and asked if I’d do their marketing. I said yes, but as my own business. They were my first two customers, a bit over two years ago, and I’ve done it for loads of local businesses since.
So you get somebody who can film, edit, light, photograph, design and build the website, and who’s run a business with a lot of moving parts. I do the web and video work myself, and a couple of remote specialists help me with some of the marketing bits.
